On the evils of Twitter

I will rest easy tonight knowing that there is an evangelist out there that shares my dislike for the twittering public. Not only that, but he’s some smart professor guy from some big college. Read the whole post here: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/04/twitter_is_evil.php

“James Hrynyshyn is completely missing the point. He has a post up where he tendentiously explains why twitter is evil, as if it should be a surprise. Why is the Pope Catholic? Why is the darkness dark? Why does Microsoft suck? These aren’t interesting questions: the point is that they are. I have a Twitter account. I do not have a “My Little Pony” account. Think about it. Isn’t it quite probable that I would leap into this technology precisely because it has great potential for evil? Be seduced, and embrace the evil. It’s fun!”

It’s about time that all of the money going into research gave us something interesting. I like that they have validated the countless hours that I spend playing xbox. Yay science!

“So, spending time in front of a computer screen isn’t necessarily the mindless and vision-ruining activity that some people claim. While excessive play can put our eyes under a lot of strain, Li’s work suggests that more moderate levels of gaming can actually sharpen our vision in at least one important respect.” More: http://scienceblogs.com/notrocketscience/2009/03/playing_shoot-em-up_video_games_can_improve_some_aspects_of.php

God people, are dumb.

I’ve always thought that religious fundamentalists are a bunch of idiots, how can anyone firmly believe that <insert religious book> written thousands of years ago has any relevance to what is going on right here and now, particularly if <insert fundamentalist person> believes that book in its literal context. Quite simple, I’ve always thought it was because those people have a low IQ. Turns out I was wrong!

“The difference is not in intelligence. It’s on the foundation of their education. Intelligent people who are indoctrinated into a faith can build marvelously intricate palaces of rationalization atop the shoddy vapor of their beliefs about gods and the supernatural; what scientists and atheists must do is build their logic on top of a more solid basis of empirical evidence and relentless self-examination. The difference isn’t their ability to reason, it is what they are reasoning about.”
